Shooting woes doom Pioneers; Marietta loses 72-41 to Wilmington
Lutes pulls down a career-high 13 rebounds in loss

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College's men's basketball team suffered its third straight defeat in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play Saturday (Dec. 8) afternoon, as visiting Wilmington College downed the Pioneers 72-41. The loss drops Marietta's record to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the OAC. The Quakers improved to 7-1, 2-1 in league play.
Marietta's inability to get shots to fall in the second period allowed Wilmington, who led 34-26 at the half, to pull away. Overall, the Pioneers shot just 17-of-58 (.293) from the floor, including 4-of-27 (.148) from long range. Wilmington finished 28-of-66 (.424) from the field, including 10-of-22 (.455) from beyond the arc. The Quakers, who turned the ball over 12 times, out rebounded the Pioneers, who gave the ball away on 18 occasions, 44-41.
Wilmington's Brandon Roger led all scorers with 20 points. He also finished with nine boards. Teammate Scott Walters added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Justin Gaines had 10 points in the win.
Marietta was paced by freshman Jordan Cox (West Union), who hit three of the Pioneers' four three-point field goals and finished with 13 points. Senior Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) continued his solid play down low, adding 12 points and eight rebounds. He got help on the boards from junior Daun Lutes (New Matamoras/Frontier), who collected a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with six points.
The Pioneers will have a week off to concentrate on final exams before returning to Fenton Court on Saturday (Dec. 15) afternoon for the final time before Christmas. Heidelberg College will be the opponent with tip-off slated for 3 p.m. |
