Pioneers shut out by No. 1 Mount Union 57-0 in season finale
Marietta finishes the season 3-7

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College football team closed its season with a 57-0 loss at No. 1 Mount Union College Saturday (Nov. 10) afternoon at Mount Union Stadium. The Pioneers finished the year 3-7 overall and 3-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Purple Raiders improved to 10-0, 9-0 in league play.

Marietta was limited to 45 total yards on 51 plays. The Pioneers, who collected just six first downs, had -35 yards rushing and 80 yards passing. Mount Union, meanwhile, accumulated 549 yards—131 yards on the ground and 418 yards through the air.

The Purple Raiders scored touchdowns on all seven of their first-half possessions to take a 49-0 lead into the locker room. Mount then scored nine points, which featured one touchdown and a safety, in the final 30 minutes to cruise to the victory.

Marietta sophomore Dexter Hughes (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) finished 5-of-17 and threw for 48 yards with two interceptions before being knocked out of the game in the second quarter. Junior Garrett Banks (Barberton) came in to complete 3-of-9 passes, throwing for 32 yards with one interception.

Sophomore George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) was the lone Pioneer ball carrier to finish with positive yards. He had two carries for four yards.

Senior Chad McDaniel (Wooster/Triway) led the receivers with four catches for 34 yards. He finished his career with 134 receptions for 1,830 yards; both rank third all-time at Marietta.

Nate Kmic paced Mount Union's ground game with 11 carries for 39 yards and three scores, while Cecil Shorts had three rushes for 35 yards.

Greg Micheli finished the day 13-of-17 and threw for 290 yards and four scores. Shorts added nine completions in 15 attempts and threw for 128 yards.

Pierre Garcon pulled in seven receptions for 119 yards, while Bryson Davis had three catches for 131 yards. Both caught a touchdown pass in the win.

Defensively, five Marietta players had a team-high six tackles. Sophomore Clinton Thompson (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) had six solo stops. Freshman JR Gibson (Sebring/West Branch) had the lone sack for the Pioneers.

James Herbert led Mount Union with six tackles. Daryl Ely finished with three interceptions in the win.
