Nov. 5, 2007
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Marietta College sophomore quarterback Dexter Hughes (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) earned Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Offensive Player of the Week honors, according to the league office, which released its weekly awards on Monday (Nov. 5) afternoon.
Hughes, who was named the Most Valuable Player by the Marietta Shrine Club, had a breakout performance to lead Marietta (3-6, 3-5 OAC) to a 38-14 victory over visiting Wilmington College Saturday (Nov. 3) at Don Drumm Stadium. The quarterback connected on 18-of-29 passing attempts to throw for a career-high 399 yards and a school-record-tying four touchdown passes. He threw touchdown passes of 24, 75, 81 and 18 yards, all in the first half. The 75-yard and 81-yard strikes to sophomore Ryan Dawson (Parkersburg, W.Va.) came on back-to-back throws in the second frame.
On the year, Hughes has completed 123-of-239 passes and thrown for 1,556 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Before the game, Marietta recognized its 21 seniors, the largest class in recent years if not school history. Those seniors will close out their careers on Saturday (Nov. 10) with a trip to Alliance, Ohio, to take on No. 1 Mount Union (9-0, 8-0 OAC). Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. The action can be heard locally on WMRT-FM 88.3 and online at http://pioneers.marietta.edu/onlinebroadcasts.html.
