Smith promoted to co-offensive coordinator at Marietta College
Jan. 25, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Head Coach Curt Wiese recently announced the promotion of assistant coach Sean Smith to co-offensive coordinator. Smith remains in charge of not only the quarterbacks but also special teams, roles he filled during the Pioneers' 6-4 season in 2006.
"Sean has proven himself as a strong offensive-minded coach over the past season," said Wiese, who will share offensive coordinator responsibilities. "He will be an instrumental part of developing this year's offense and developing our next Pioneer quarterback."
Smith, the former Marshall University quarterback, made an immediate impact with the Pioneers in his first season as quarterbacks coach and special teams coordinator. Under his careful guidance, the Marietta passing attack blossomed and completely rewrote the Pioneers' passing records. The 2006 program set a new standard for passing attempts (380), completions (203), yards (2,845) and touchdowns (20) as well as first downs through the air (119).
Smith, who graduated from Marshall with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2000 and Masters of Science in athletic administration in 2002, spent 2004 and 2005 as the quarterbacks’ coach at St. Marys High School in West Virginia. During that time, Smith also worked as a sales representative for Athlon Pharmaceuticals, where he was a three-time District Salesman of the Month.
While at Marshall, Smith served as the backup to current N.Y. Jets quarterback Chad Pennington and played baseball with the Thundering Herd.
"I am certainly grateful and excited for this opportunity," said Smith. "In considering the kids that we have coming back and the addition of this year's recruiting class, I look at our offensive potential with great optimism. Hopefully, this optimism will someday translate into an eventual playoff birth."
Sean and his wife Angie live in Vienna, W.Va.
