Marietta College’s Curry to play in two All-Star games, including with teammate Vrable at the All-American Bowl on Dec. 9

Dec. 5, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College senior wide receiver/punter Jason Curry (Akron/Springfield) was recently selected to join his teammate quarterback Jason Vrable (South Park, Pa.) as a participant in the All-American Bowl, which will be held at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday (Dec. 9). In addition, Curry will participate in the National All-Stars Bowl College Football Classic & Pro Football Combine in Louisville, Ky., during the weekend of April 6-7.
Curry, a 2005 second team All-OAC selection as both a punter and return specialist, earned honorable mention All-OAC as a wide receiver this season. Curry set the new single-season school record for receiving yards (760) and touchdowns (8). He finished fifth in the OAC in receiving yards per game (76.0). Curry was also third on the team in catches (45) this year. Curry finished his career as the all-time leader in touchdown receptions (21), while second in receiving yards (1,835) and third in receptions (122). He also set new career marks for punts (207) and punting yards (7,486).
Since 1996, the All-American Bowl has become a showcase for Division II/III & Free Agent players looking to earn a spot on a Minor League, Arena, European and NFL roster. The two 36-man rosters are made up each year of seniors from Division II/III and free agents around the nation. Seniors and free agents named to their respective conference and team all-stars lists are invited to the All-American Bowl first, the remainder of the roster is filled based on recommendations from Division II/III and Minor League head coaches around America.
The National All-Stars Bowl is held throughout the United States, and it provides athletes outstanding exposure to professional football. The games are regionalized so that prospects are showcased in each area of the nation. This allows pro teams to take a closer look at players in each condensed area or region of the country. Players in the National All-Stars Bowl are always tremendous athletes with many of them being outstanding prospects that did not have the big time exposure or the opportunity to showcase themselves in any of the other major all star games (Senior Bowl, Hula Bowl, East-West Shrine, Blue-Grey Game).
The last Marietta players to participate in an all-star game were Greg Eder, Jay Jones and Lee Kuberacki. The trio played in the 1998 National Classic.
The Pioneers (6-4, 5-4 OAC) set five single-season team records in 2006 and finished in at three-way tie for fourth place in the OAC. Marietta set a new passing standard for attempts (380), completions (203), yards (2845), touchdowns (20) and first downs (119).
