Two Pioneer football players named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV
Senior quarterback Jason Vrable and junior linebacker Carter Shaver earn second team honors

Nov. 9, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released their 2006 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District football teams Thursday (Nov. 9), and Marietta College senior quarterback Jason Vrable (South Park, Pa.) and junior linebacker Carter Shaver (Trotwood/Waynesville) were each named to the second team in district IV.

“This is a great honor for both of these student-athletes,” said first year Head Coach Curt Wiese. “They are role models for our young players, not only on the field but more importantly in the classroom. Jason and Carter exemplify the type of kids we are looking for in our program.”

Sports Information Directors from the district (all NCAA Division II, III and NAIA schools in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama) nominate and vote on selections with first team all-district selections moving onto the national ballot. In order to qualify a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve.

On the field, Vrable has established himself as Marietta’s top passer in over a century of football. With one game remaining in his career, Vrable is the single-season and career record holder in every Pioneer-passing category. The offensive captain leads the Ohio Athletic Conference in passing yards (fourth in the nation) and total offense. He has completed 190-of-342 passes and thrown for 2,672 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2006 and is 483-of-869 with 5,929 yards passing and 40 TD passes in his career. Off the field, he maintains a solid grade point average as an athletic training major. Vrable, a 2005 Academic All-OAC honorable mention award winner, is also an active member of the Marietta College Student Athletic Trainers Organization.

Shaver is having a breakout season in 2006. The outside linebacker is currently fifth on the squad in tackles with 40 (27 solo). He has added 4.5 tackles for loss and one sack this fall. In the classroom, the petroleum engineering major carries an impressive grade point average. Shaver is also active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers

The football team, who is 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the OAC, closes out the season at home Saturday (Nov. 11) against top-ranked Mount Union. The Senior Day kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. at Don Drumm Stadium.
