Improvements to McCoy Athletic Center complete
July 23, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio — First-year football coach Curt Wiese says he has seen some high-quality locker rooms in his day. As objectively as he can be, he admits Marietta College's addition at the McCoy Athletic Facility makes it one of the finest, if not the finest, in NCAA Division III.
McCoy, which houses all of the Pioneers' football operations, recently had a 4,000-square-foot addition constructed. The new wing, which cost approximately $200,000, will be the team's locker room beginning this season. The addition comfortably holds 140 lockers.
"We are extremely thankful to those who helped make this a reality," Wiese said. "This facility definitely needed some improvements in order to meet the demands of our growing program and it will help us as we continue to reach new heights in the Ohio Athletic Conference."
The addition gives the football program more space for meetings and allows the current weight room to be expanded into the space that was previously cramped with lockers. Also, beginning this season, all Marietta press conferences and post-game interviews will take place at McCoy.
Cadre Construction of Marietta was the general contractor, while Lang Masonry Contractors of Waterford, Joy Excavating Co. of Marietta, Davis Pickering & Co. of Marietta, Morrison Inc. of Marietta, and architect Michael Scott of Marietta all performed subcontracting.
The McCoy Athletic Facility opened in 1993 thanks to a lead donation by Chuck McCoy '42. He is a retired chairman and CEO of Premier Bancorp, Inc.. When it originally opened it was 6,800 square feet. It still features a reception area, coaches' offices, conference room and laundry room.
