Marietta ends season with 58-7 home loss to No. 22 Ohio Northern
Wagner eclipses 3,000 career rushing yards and Vrable sets new single-season record for completions and yards

Nov. 12, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College football team ended its 2005 season with a 58-7 loss to No. 22 Ohio Northern Saturday (Nov. 12) at Don Drumm Stadium.

With the loss, the head coach Todd Glaser and his Pioneers finish the year 5-5 overall, 4-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Polar Bears end the season 8-2 overall, 7-2 in league play.

It was an emotional day for 13 Pioneer seniors, as they played their last collegiate game. The seniors — Joe Brennan (Aurora/University), Matt Fuller (Toms River, N.J./Monsiongar Donovan), Eric Johnson (Mayfield/NDCL), Darren Marks (Parkesburg, W.Va.), Chris McMahon (St. Louisville/Licking Valley), Justin Pauley (Charleston, W.Va./Sissonville), Darkeevin Peoples (Akron/North), Jason Price (Fredericktown), Jeff Sherman (Akron/North), James Taylor (Marion), Erik Valiante (Wadsworth), Steven Wagner (Harwick, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Eric Workman (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) — finished their four years with a record of 16-24, the most wins since the class of 2000.

Saturday was also a memorable afternoon for Wagner. The running back finished his career with 3,012 rushing yards — sixth best in school history. He is the first Marietta back to eclipse the mark since Kenneth Sasu in 2000.

In addition, junior Jason Vrable (South Park, Pa.) completed 16-of-32 passes for 158 yards to set the Pioneers' single-season record for completions (164) and passing yards (1,883).

Marietta took an early 7-0 lead with a 10-play, 71-yard drive on its opening possession. The drive was capped by a three-yard touchdown pass from Vrable to junior Nic North (Madison, Wis./East).

Ohio Northern responded with a 10-play, 62-yard drive of their own to tie the score at 7-7 with 6:45 to play in the first quarter. Adam Quirk capped the drive with a six-yard pass to Derek Garrod.

The score remained the same until R.J. Meadows gave the Polar Bears the lead, 14-7, with a one-yard touchdown run.

Following a Quirk interception on its next drive, Ohio Northern went on to score on each of its final seven possession to run away with the 58-7 victory.

Qurik, who finished 16-of-24 for a career-high 300 yards passing, had touchdown passes of 6, 26, 10 and 15, while running for an 18-yard score in the win.

Wagner finished the afternoon with 19 carries for 68 yards. ONU's Garrod had 19 carries for 105 yards, while Meadows finished with 17 attempts for 94 yards and two scores.

Brian Lee pulled in a team-high five receptions for 155 yards and a score for Ohio Northern. Junior Jason Curry (Akron/Springfield) led Marietta's receivers with five grabs for 67 yards.

Sophomore Brian Hahn (Upper Sandusky) finished with a game-high 13 tackles, while junior Anthony Banks (Colonial Heights, Va./Thomas Dale) added 10 for Marietta. Rick Danison had a team-high 12 tackles for Ohio Northern.
