Wagner's Sunday performance earns him OAC Player of the Week honors

Sept. 20, 2004
TWINSBURG, Ohio - The Ohio Athletic Conference announced today (Sept. 20) that Marietta College junior running back Steven Wagner (Harwick, PA/Fox Chapel) was named the OAC offensive Player-of-the-Week.

Wagner collected a career-high 258 yards on the ground and had two touchdowns in the Pioneers (2-0) 31-8 victory over Heidelberg Sunday. He aslo pulled in one reception for 11 yards. The game was originally slated for Saturday, but had to be postponed and relocated due to flooding in the mid-Ohio valley

Wagner is the first Pioneer to eclipse the 200-yard plateau since Ken Sasu on Nov. 11, 2000. The 258 yards is also the most for a single rusher since Sasu's 262 yard performance Oct. 17, 1998. The Pioneer single-game record, also a national record, is held by Dante Brown. Brown rushed for 441 yards against Baldwin-Wallace in 1996.

The junior scored on runs of 16 and 60 yards against the Student Princes to help lead MC to its second straight win to open the season.

The Pioneers will look to make history Saturday (Sept. 25) when they visit University Heights, to battle John Carroll (0-2) at 6 p.m. Marietta has never beaten the Blue Streaks and will look to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 1972. The 1995 squad did begin the year 3-0-1, but tied John Carroll in week two.
