Pioneer women also earn team award for sixth straight season

Feb. 26, 2008
NEW ORLEANS, La. — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its 2007 NCAA Division III USTFCCCA Women’s All-Academic Cross Country Teams Tuesday (Feb. 26), and Marietta College earned the honor for the sixth straight season. In addition, sophomore standout Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) became the first female in Pioneer history to be named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team.

Robertson, finished 43rd at the Great Lakes Regional Meet on Nov. 7, 2007. She led Marietta to a 16th place finish overall by covering the 6K course in 23:20.35. It was the highest finish and fastest time ever for a Lady Pioneer at the regional level. Robertson, who maintains a 3.768 grade point average as a biology major, also earned All-OAC honors after finishing 11th at the Conference Championship on Oct. 27, 2007.

203 Division III female student-athletes received the 2007 USTFCCCA All-Academic honor, up 15 from last year’s total. 106 Division III institutions are represented on this year’s All-Academic team, led by SUNY-Geneseo, which placed six student-athletes on the squad.

The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average and must finish in the top 25 percent of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.

Members of Marietta’s team also included junior Jessi Larrison (Batavia), sophomores Shannon McDonald (Lorain/Amherst Steele), Brenda Puckett (Eaton/Preble Shawnee), Kaity Smith (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Logan Wern (North Canton/Hoover) as well as freshmen Mehgan Cline (Dublin/Coffman) and Chelsea Kamody (Amherst). The cumulative grade point average for the team was 3.276.

141 Division III women’s programs received the USTFCCCA’s All-Academic Team honors this year compared to 112 schools from last season. Just over a third of all Division III institutions (390) who sponsor women’s cross country received the honor. In addition, 30 of the 32 teams in the championship field at this year’s NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams.

For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, it must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet.  The team must also have a minimum 3.10 team cumulative grade point average.
